The medium used for these illustrations are a direct creation of Odette's madness. Soaked from the rain, the color paper used as the artworks' canvas saw an unexpected and beautiful merging of colours. Some that used to be white, turned pink. Others that used to be green turned to a gradient of pink and purple. Finding these beautiful creations amongst the destruction was like a hug of hope and inspiration.
Each illustration is framed with a breeze-block shaped linocut stamp. This layout was inspired by a scenic view surrounded by a breeze-block wall from Isda Market in the Northern part of Siargao. The use of breeze-blocks was an ode to mid-century and retro Philippine home design, which is still very much alive in the local houses around Siargao.
The island is moving fast. The leaves are growing back. Brown has turned into green. The broken has been fixed. Siargao is alive and its energy has returned.
These illustrations are fantastical, neon and bright representations of this unbreakable resilience. They are interpretations of hope and the rejuvenation of life on the island.
